Petting style? How to pet your cat the right way?
Cats, pretty much like humans, have their own personality, likes and dislikes. And this extends to how they like to be petted.
While the rules for petting might be valid for majority of the feline family, especially the domestic ones, it does not necessarily conform to all. There is always that group of cats that will have different set of preferences and choices which will not match these rules. Hence, we have divided the cats broadly into two groups. Let us know in details:
What is your pet’s petting style?
The classic feline petting style
Most of us have encountered the classic feline types. They love to be petted, no doubt about that, but there are certain restrictions, or terms and conditions, associated with petting. Here’s a brief of what they like and what they don’t. Since none of us will wish to put our beautiful feline friend in distress, let’s begin with what should not be done.
The belly rub is a strict NO-NO. It’s not your dog! Your cat does not really appreciate that belly rub if it the classic feline type. Never even dare to touch the tail of your cat. It’s sensitive. Also, it is out of bounds. Do not try to catch the paw. Your regular cat will not appreciate it and you might get a few nasty scratches in return. Better not risk it!
But they do like to be loved and pampered and there are enough areas that they will allow you to touch and caress.
The jaw rub feels heavenly to them, quite evident from the way they will close their eyes as you give them the jaw rub. The good old fashioned head petting is perfectly okay. You can go on head petting for long. Also, the back scratching is perfectly fine. Let them sit on your lap as you give them these pleasures.
The party purr petting style
This type of cats is the reason behind all the confusion. They simply love being petted and loved and are absolutely a darling with their human. There is hardly anything that they will not like about being petted. What they like? Well, here is a brief look at it.

They will love the head pet. The body scratch is also extremely enjoyable. But that’s not all. Scratch their head. Give them a knuckle head. Rub the top of their nose; some refers to it as the pixie dust and the pixie sneeze. Tickle their ears, tickle their chin. Give them a chin knuckle. Rub their jaws. Tickle and rub them as you please. Make spirals on their head. Give them the spa treatment with a body massage. Tickle their belly. Rub their belly.
Allow them and they will get some petting done by themselves by rubbing their head and chin against your hands and body!
They love the pleasure of being petted and have few restrictions, if at all!
